Mentor Program 'Sisters Peak' Provides Positive Role Models for Girls

You want to blame the teachers. You want to blame the parents. You want to blame the students themselves. That doesn't get us anywhere. It's going to take a lot of work by a lot of people, so what are you going to do?

FOX Chicago’s Tisha Lewis and Robin Robinson spent a morning with school leaders at Wentworth Elementary, making plans to start something there.

In a series of promotional spots earlier this year, Robin Robinson challenged people to step up on public education.

“I think every parent no matter where they are in life, wants their children to be greater," Wentworth principal Dina Everage said.

Everage is gathering up a village to help raise the children in this West Englewood neighborhood, and volunteers from FOX Chicago are planning programs at least once a month starting next fall.

Robinson thinks the programs should target the values of self, community and careers every year.

The program will be tailored for 6th, 7th and 8th grade girls, and it will be called Sisters Peak – as in reach for the top.

“We just have a lot of students whose esteem is very low,” Everage said. "When you sit and speak with the young ladies, the root of this is like, I'm not happy with who I am."

Lewis and Robinson have spent some time at Wentworth this past spring, and observed so much promise in the kids, real commitment from the leaders, and lots of room for improvement. They believe the time to begin is now.

"Everything that happens for children is about relationships, so a relationship is what transforms everything,” Everage said. “So we could do like our world, your world type of outing, see a little of your world but also maybe visit some places in Englewood and make them understand that this is a really rich community as well.”
