It seems hard to believe that cervical cancer was once the leading cause of cancer related deaths in women.

Thanks to the Pap test, cervical cancer related rates have plummeted. It detects changes in the cells in the cervix way before it turns into cancer.

Cervical cancer is slow-going, so the US preventive task force now recommends less frequent tests. If you are between the ages of twenty-one and twenty-nine, get a Pap test every two years. After the age of thirty, if you have had three negative tests in a row, you can stretch it out to three years.

Women younger than twenty-one should not get tested. As their cervix is still not mature, and it is yielding misleading results with a Pap smear.

Don’t smoke, it doubles the risk. And persuade a friend to get tested. Most women who die of cervical cancer skipped the test.
