CPS Can Fire Low-Performing Teachers

The Chicago School Board has given Ron Huberman the power to remove the lowest-performing teachers.

The CPS chief said removing poorly-rated teachers is the right thing to do.

The Chicago School Board is allowing him wide discretion despite teacher tenure and seniority, but the Chicago Teachers Union disagrees with the plan.

CTU said the board is bound by the teachers' contract, and it wants the last hired to be the first fired.

They may sue.

Approximately 2,700 teachers could be pink-slipped as CPS tries to close a $500 million budget deficit.
