Hundreds of Chicago Public School teachers got some unwelcome news Thursday.
CPS leaders confirmed that layoff notices were going out to 400 teachers. It was the first round of job cuts the district has implemented to offset a $370 million budget deficit.
Two hundred support staff members were also getting layoff notices.
CPS was set to begin budget talks with the Chicago Teachers Union Friday. The district wants the union to give back a scheduled pay increase.
Union leaders have balked at the request.
