Labor Day weekend is one of the busiest boating weekends of the year, and that means the Chicago Coast Guard will be busy.
Not a lot of people may know that Chicago has one of the busiest Coast Guard stations -- Station Calumet Harbor.
Coasties are trained to handle anything Lake Michigan throws at them and have to pass constant physical fitness tests.
And since 9/11, they've taken on a greater role in national security. Everyone on the boat is armed on the lookout for potential terrorist threats to Chicago's lakefront.
Every mission is different. Sometimes it's as simple as re-starting a flooded motor; sometimes it's as bizarre as rescuing a jetskier on a breakwater in the middle of winter.
In extreme cases, the Coast Guard helicopter can be on the scene in 30 minutes.
