The Wheaton Bandit is one of the most prolific serial bank robbers to hit the Chicago area. FBI agents believe he robbed fifteen banks in four years.
For the first time, investigators say they have a possible suspect in the case.
They developed this lead by going back and taking another look at all evidence they had in this case. When they did that, the FBI's Ross Rice says investigators found bank security photos of a man taken a few weeks before the bank was robbed by the Wheaton Bandit that match the physical description of the this bandit. Those photos were snapped in late December 2004 at a Mid American Bank Branch on Roosevelt Road in Glen Ellyn. Investigators say the Wheaton Bandit robbed that same bank in early January of 2005.
In addition to this man's physical description matching the Wheaton Bandit's, agents say the photos indicate this man wasn't a bank customer. They say he appeared only to go in to the bank to get change and cased the bank while doing so.
Based on this information, agents are calling the man in these photos a possible suspect or a person of interest in this case. If this man isn't the Wheaton Bandit, investigators believe he may know who the bandit is.
The Wheaton Bandit last struck in December 2006. Right before his last robbery, agents say a witness got a "good glimpse" of the Wheaton bandit outside another bank. They say witness saw the bandit's face unmasked and helped them develop a composite sketch of the bandit. Agents say the Wheaton Bandit has been laying low since then.
A fifty-thousand dollar reward is still being offered for information leading to the arrest of the Wheaton Bandit.
Here is s description of what agents say this possible suspect looks like. He is described as a white male, around 30 years old, about six feet tall, and has a thin to medium build.
