Greater Chicago Food Depository Feeds, Teaches

Posted:

It's another busy, deliciously aromatic day at the Greater Chicago Food Depository, and students and staff are hard at work learning lessons that will last a lifetime.

Anna Jones is the big cheese. She is the director of the depository's community kitchen.

She loves her work and the interaction with her students.

"Students have so many things going on outside school. It's a 14-week course and we're very ambitious with how we approach this," Jones said.

Anna doesn't just teach recipes while helping to feed the hungry, she also is teaching the nutrition to last a healthy lifetime.

"It goes into every aspect of your life to eat well,' Jones said.

Eager to learn and to quench their hunger for a better life all around are students like Everett Barksdale

Barksdale is hoping to leave a troubled past behind and make a fresh start.

"I was unemployed. I was homeless. Every day I walk out of here I feel marvelous,' Barksdale said.

The Greater Chicago Food Depository, Fox Chicago and Jewel Osco are teaming up this September for Hunger Action Month. Last year more than $2 million was raised and this year it's the same theme: Give a little and you can feed a lot.
