St. Kevin Food Pantry Feeds Growing Need

Posted:

It's estimated that 845,000 people in Cook County need help finding their next meal. As the economy continues to sputter, the lines have been getting longer and longer at our local food pantries.

Pantries like St. Kevin on the Southeast Side need help to keep the food flowing.

On the Southeast Side of the city in the South Deering neighborhood, the working class poor and those who are unemployed line up at a fresh produce market offered once a month.

"There's been an increase unfortunately. My numbers have been tripled and this year they have quadrupled," said Carmen Tonkovich, one of the organizers. "I do have people who come in and don't believe they are in the same situation as everybody else. They don't like looking at me eye to eye, they didn't think this would happen to them, and now we're all in the same boat right now."

And volunteers like brothers Ronald and Harold Ray have been giving their time here for more than 25 years.

"My mom had to shop at Goodwill to put clothes on my back and to eat. And when you see folks out here who are hungry and need something, just to make sure they get something is a beautiful blessing," Ronald Ray said.

They say these days, they are seeing more and more new faces.

St. Kevin is one of 650 food pantries that work with the Greater Chicago Food Depository.

A NYPD plan intended to better connect with the community seems to have backfired a bit. The police department asked its twitter followers to share pictures of themselves with New York City police officers using the hashtag "myNYPD." Some did share nice pictures, but others not so much. Some of the first pictures posted showed regular citizens standing with very friendly looking police officers.
