For many of us who reside in the Greater Chicago area, the thought of the approaching holidays makes us think of parties and family events with plenty to eat and drink.
But for many individuals and families right in our midst they will probably have no such thoughts.
A recent study by the Greater Chicago Food Depository found that one in five Chicago residents are uncertain where they will find their next meal and are considered “food insecure.”
A staggering 700,000 people each year rely on emergency and supplemental food provided by the Food Depository and its member food pantries and soup kitchens.
These numbers have risen dramatically since 2006 and are a reflection of the economic hard times and rising unemployment that plagues our nation.
That is why FOX Chicago has partnered with the Chicago Food Depository to join the fight against hunger in our area.
Since Thanksgiving FOX Chicago News has through our coverage brought to life the stories of struggling families and the truly inspiring ways that communities and organizations have raised much needed money and donated food to help fight hunger in our community.
I call upon all of us who are more fortunate to donate funds – donate food – or volunteer your time to provide food to those in need.
You can donate on line at One City,One Food Drive at chicagosfoodbank.org or host a food drive with your own local organization or company.
It is also clear to me and to our employees that this effort to help stamp out hunger in our community must carry on throughout the year.
Please join us and our partners in our continuing effort to help our community provide hunger relief to those less fortunate.
