An audience member asks Dr. Oz about the Paleo diet, and she isn’t sure about cutting-out the whole grains and the dairy.
Dr. Oz explains that the Paleo diet is centered around eating the same foods our ancestors ate thousands of years ago (name deriving from the Paleolithic Age, consisting of lean meats, fresh fish, fruits, and non-starchy vegetables). Dr. Oz explains the disadvantage of believing in this diet is that the life expectancy of someone back then was about 25 years of age.
The diet apparently cuts-out whole grains, which Dr. Oz does not recommend avoiding for a long period of time. Dr. Oz notes that the diet’s focus does nudge us in the right direction, in that it focuses on unpackaged/unlabeled processed foods.
Dr. Oz recommends eating a similar diet, but he also purports that it needs to be augmented to be successful with today’s food sources, making it a realistic and livable diet.
Chat is an audience member that informs Dr. Oz that she had breast cancer and a vasectomy last year. Chat asks Dr. Oz if she should avoid soy foods.
Dr. Oz explains that soy foods and other products in our food supply have phytoestrogens in them. Dr. Oz states that our bodies already have many different kinds of estrogen, and the medical community is not fully convinced that staying away from soy foods is much help for women with breast cancer (since soy foods typically have beneficial estrogen).
Dr. Oz further states that once one has estrogen dependant cancer, the number one thing he would do is to get as lean as possible – due to the fact that even a little bit of fat in the body can start to make even more toxic forms of estrogen, which can in-turn stimulate more serious cancers.
