Investigator: Whitey Bulger can afford lawyer

Posted:

One of the lead investigators in the case of James "Whitey" Bulger says he believes the alleged mob boss can afford his own attorney because of the money he amassed during his years of crime in Boston.

Retired state police Maj. Tom Duffy was in federal court in Boston as a spectator when James "Whitey" Bulger made his first appearances before federal magistrates

During the hearing, Bulger asked for a public defender, though he also said he could afford a lawyer if the government gave him back the money it seized when he was arrested in California after 16 years as a fugitive.

Duffy said he was in court because he wanted to see the fruits of the long investigation. He said Boston wouldn't soon see someone like Bulger again.
