Former U.S. Attorney Dan Webb named special prosecutor in Koschman case

Posted: Updated:

Cook County Circuit Judge Michael P. Toomin appointed former U.S. Attorney Dan Web as special prosecutor Monday to re-examine the 2004 death of David Koschman after being punched by Richard J. "R.J." Vanecko, a nephew of then-Mayor Richard M. Daley, the Sun-Times is reporting.

Webb was immediately sworn in as special prosecutor. He will have the authority to subpoena records and compel witnesses to testify under oath in the politically charged case.

Toomin said he would allow Webb to hire a staff to aid in the investigation.

"The special prosecutor shall have unfettered access to reports, records and other materials related to this matter," Toomin said in his written order appointing Webb.

The judge didn't set a salary but said it would not exceed the salary paid to Cook County State's Attorney Anita Alvarez, who had fought against having a special prosecutor, saying her office could handle the case.

Webb, a partner at the Chicago law firm Winston & Strawn, has been involved in many high-profile cases, including leading the Operation Greylord investigation into judicial corruption in Cook County and also prosecuting.retired Admiral John Poindexter in the Iran-Contra case.

As a criminal-defense lawyer, Webb has won a reputation as one of the best in the country.
