CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A campus alert has been issued by the University of Illinois at Chicago after a student was knocked unconscious when he was struck in the head during a robbery near the school's Near West Side campus Tuesday night.

Between 8:30 and 9 p.m. Tuesday, the UIC student was in the 400 block of South Green Street, near the UIC campus, when he was approached from behind by an unseen offender who placed an unknown object at the back of his head and demanded money, the alert said.

The student surrendered his wallet but was struck on the head and lost consciousness, the alert said. He later went to Rush Medical Center, where he was treated for a head injury and interviewed by Chicago and UIC police.

The UIC Police/Chicago Police Department Joint Robbery Task Force is assisting in the follow-up investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call UIC Police at (312) 996-2830.

UIC Police strongly recommend complying with an armed or violent offender whose intent appears to be property or valuables, as the victim did in this case. They also advise that students, faculty, staff and neighbors report any suspicious activity/persons to UIC or Chicago police.
