Leighton Talks About Exile In New York

Posted:

Former Philadelphia Flyers hero Michael Leighton is stranded in the minors in upstate New York. Can Leighton make back to Philly - or somewhere else?

Leighton is doing well in the minors. He has four shutouts and his stats are among the best in the AHL

But Leighton would most likely be claimed on waivers if the Flyers try to recall him before the playoffs.

Leighton could come back as the third goalie for the Flyers in the playoffs, if one of the team's two current goaltenders is injured.

A few weekends ago, Fox 29’s John Anderson took a 283 mile drive up into the Adirondack Mountains. He landed in Glens Falls, NY.

The city is filled with small diners and a big paper mill.

But on weekends, the Civic Center is lit up, because it’s hockey night!

The center is the home of the Adirondack Phantoms, the Flyers minor league team.

Protecting the net is former Flyers goalie Michael Leighton.

It has been a tough stretch for Michael. After almost winning the Stanley Cup, he had back surgery and now is back playing in smaller rinks in the AHL.

John spoke to Michael about his experience in last year’s playoffs, his physical recovery and his love of the game.

They also talk about that one loss that still stings and that mistake he made on the Blackhawks final goal. That painful loss is creating his hunger to get back.

Check out John’s interview with Michael Leighton in the video to the left.
