New York Marine Dies in Afghanistan


A Marine reservist from western New York died in Afghanistan Monday, February 7, 2011, the Department of Defense announced.

Lance Cpl. Aaron M. Swanson, 21, of Jamestown, died during combat operations in Helmand province. The Pentagon has not released further details of his death.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo ordered flags on state government buildings be flown at half-staff on February 10 in Swanson's honor.

"On behalf of all New Yorkers I extend our heartfelt sympathy to the family, friends, and fellow Marines of Lance Corporal Swanson," Cuomo said. "This young Marine gave his life for our nation and we will honor and remember his service."

Swanson was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, Marine Forces Reserve, based in Buffalo.
