Staten Island Turkey Survey

Posted:

New York environmental officials want Staten Island residents to talk turkey.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation says a "turkey survey" has been sent to households in an area populated by dozens of roaming fowl.

The Staten Island Advance says the survey aims to find out whether residents like their feathered neighbors, or consider them a nuisance.

The turkeys are a hybrid of wild and captive breeds.

The DEC says no facility can be found to take such a large number of turkeys and keep them separate from wild turkey populations.

If residents don't want them around, the state says options might include slaughtering some or all of the birds to feed the poor. Or, it says, humans could be taught techniques for co-existing with them.
