Charter School Restructured

Posted:

Democracy Prep Public Schools gas won unanimous approval from the SUNY Board of Trustees to restructure Harlem Day Charter School. It is being called New York's first charter school turnaround initiative.

At the end of the school year, Harlem Day will close and re-open in August as Harlem Prep, serving the same students in grades K-5 in the same facility on East 123rd Street. SUNY approved the Harlem Prep application with a five year charter, a new board of directors, new staff and the proven Democracy Prep educational model that has produced the top performing middle school in New York City, as judged by the Chancellor's annual Progress Report.

Democracy Prep has been working with Harlem Day staff to start to improve the school. Harlem Day currently serves 243 students. Each will automatically become a Harlem Prep student if they choose, though families also have the option of withdrawing their children. Harlem Prep will hold a public lottery in April to fill any open seats.

Harlem Prep will feature a longer school day and year, a structured school culture, a focus on real-time data, and rigorous academics. Teachers will undergo a full month of professional development in August and regular, weekly trainings throughout the school year.

Harlem Prep predicts 75% of students will be proficient in math and English Language Arts within two years. Currently, just 20% of Harlem Day students are proficient in English Language Arts and 25% are proficient in math.
