New Jersey Marine Dies in Afghanistan

A Marine from New Jersey was killed in Afghanistan this week, the Department of Defense reported.

Lance Cpl. Francisco R. Jackson, 24, of Elizabeth, died Oct. 19 during combat operations in Helmand province, the military said Wednesday.

An improvised explosive device detonated and killed Jackson, a field artillery cannoneer, the Marine Corps said.

Jackson enlisted in the Marine Corps in 2009 and was on his first combat deployment, the Star-Ledger reported.

He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 11th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, based out of Camp Pendleton, California.
