Those Who Get Noticed Get the Jobs

myFox Job Shop - For those who are looking for a job or looking for a new job, the old adage of it's who you know just isn't enough any more. Now, the question really becomes who knows you? and when looking for a job it is those that are networking and getting in front of decision makers that are getting the jobs. In order to make sure you are being seen by decision makers you need to be in the right place.

Decision makers are HR and hiring managers of large companies or recruiters working on placements but they can also be owners or even managers in small or medium sized companies that are looking online to find potential candidates. Most of the time when they are looking for candidates you will never be aware of their presence. They are not advertising an open position or posting a job description online, they are simply looking, and these hidden jobs are why it is vital that you can be found by trolling decision makers.

An example of this currently taking place is a man I know who owns a small business. He has finally decided to do a little house cleaning in his office and let go of two employees with terrible attendance records, low productivity numbers and little motivation. The owner has kept these two individuals because of the poor job market and was hoping their performance would improve. But, it is a business and definitely a buyers market and so he has begun looking for replacements and right now only three people know he is doing this. These two hidden jobs will most likely be filled without ever placing an ad and will be made aware of to only a handful of people.

To find out what others can find out about you try doing a search on yourself and doing a search on the position you are looking for. The search on yourself should quickly identify you and your professional skills, if it doesn't then you need to do some work to build your identification so you will get found and noticed. There are several ways you can improve your search rankings:

Increase / Improve Online Profiles - If you are not using LinkedIn or Facebook as marketing tools for your job search you are truly missing out. With LinkedIn having over 100 Million members and Facebook at over 250 Million members this is where you should start. Build your profile on both sites to showcase the achievements, accomplishments, responsibilities and other requirements the job you are seeking is looking for. Within LinkedIn and Facebook join and participate in groups and follow companies that are relevant to your industry or profession.

You can be searched using completed profiles from many other site including Yahoo, Google, ZoomInfo, Ziggs, and Ning. Use strong key words to help you become even more searchable. These profiles will be searchable on search engines and help you stand out for the right reasons.

Just a caution regarding Facebook, make sure to use privacy settings available to keep your profile professional in appearance and content. If you have something that you wouldn't want your grandma to read or see on your profile then it needs to come down. You might be missing out on opportunities and you will never even know, simply because of pictures or comments on your Facebook account.

Associations, Affiliations, Alumni - Get involved! Join associations, affiliations, alumni sites, and local networking groups to use for networking but also so that your name and links will be added to these sites which are frequently searched by those looking to fill a position in your industry or profession.

These sites offer great opportunities to learn about job fairs, companies that are hiring, seminars, workshops and forums within your industry. They also provide resources, articles and insight to the movers and shakers in the industry, trends, and outlook, which will all be valuable for your job search.

Volunteer, Blog - Volunteering your services within your community, church or for a particular cause is face to face networking. By talking with others and sharing your skills and goals you can expand your contact list and it can lead to your contact information being place on their website, which is searchable.

Blogging, writing articles, publishing e-books or books can be an effective way to demonstrate your expertise, opinion, knowledge and passion for the field or industry you are in. It is searchable but also a great way to stay active in your field if you are unemployed.

Keep in mind during your search, that while you are looking for the right job employers are looking for the right candidate. Unless you get in front of them using online profiles and websites you may miss some great opportunities.
