700,000 People Call Digital TV Hot Line

Nearly 700,000 people called a federal hot line this week, confused about the nationwide switch from analog to digital TV broadcasts that occurred Friday. The Federal Communications Commission said Saturday that nearly 30 percent of the calls handled by agents from Monday to Friday were about how to operate the digital converter boxes needed to receive signals on older TVs.

The Federal Communications Commission has contracted with dozens of companies to provide free, expert in-home DTV converter box installation assistance. The transition to digital television happens on June 12. The FCC says it is especially focused on reaching 'at risk' households: low income consumers, minority communities, non-English speaking consumers, senior citizens, consumers living in rural areas or on tribal lands and consumers with disabilities.

Geek Squad Offers Free DTV Converter Box

The Geek Squad Home Theatre Installers will be providing free DTV Converter Box installations to unconverted households in 31 states across the country. The Geek Squad will connect up to two converter boxes per household to existing broadcast antennas and analog TVs. They will also adjust the antennas already in place, scan and rescan converter boxes to the digital channels available, integrate and existing VCR, and provide guidance of the converter box.
