(NewsCore) - Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Thursday branded President Barack Obama as “out of touch” for regularly hitting the links while the nation deals with the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
Speaking at the Young Republican Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C., McConnell hammered Democrats for characterizing Republicans as “crazy,” Politico reported.
“What’s crazy is a $13 trillion debt,” McConnell said. “Out of touch? Scheduling more tee times than Phil Mickelson during the greatest environmental disaster in our nation’s history is out of touch.”
Republicans have pointed to Obama’s favorite leisure activity as evidence he has mishandled the oil spill. The Republican National Committee launched the website GulforGolf.com, which states that the president has been on 10 golf outings since the April 20 explosion and subsequent sinking of the BP-leased Deepwater Horizon drilling rig.
The White House has dismissed critics of president’s frequent golf outings. When questioned about them at a press briefing last month, spokesman Bill Burton said, “I don’t think that there’s a person in this country that doesn’t think that their president ought to have a little time to clear his mind."
