(NewsCore) - Her name is May, and she may well be the feel-good story of the month. May is an 18lb (8kg) toy poodle found in the grounds of a nursing home in Sechelt, British Columbia (BC).
While no one saw her arrive, deep talon marks in her back and sides strongly suggest she was the unwilling passenger of a hungry eagle for some time until being dropped from the sky, the Vancouver Sun reported Monday.
Found by staff at the nursing home, about 43 miles (70km) northwest of Vancouver, she was taken to the nearby Sunshine Coast SPCA, who are crediting the bird of prey with saving May's life.
BC SPCA official Lorie Chortyk said the toy poodle had no identification and, along with the talon cuts and broken ribs, was in generally poor condition, which indicated she had been wandering for some time before being considered as a snack by the eagle.
"She's been a stray," Chortyk said. "There's been severe neglect, and who knows how long she's been out there. We estimate she's six years old but her nails were growing into her pads and her teeth are badly decayed. Ironically, if it hadn't been for this we might never have found her."
Chortyk said May needs extensive dental work, and appealed for public assistance to pay for the surgery before the dog is found a new home and hopefully keeps both feet firmly on the ground.
"May's survived so much, the least we can do is find her a good home. If anyone deserves a happy ending it's her," said Chortyk.
