(Fox News) - President Barack Obama said Wednesday that he “will not rest” until the oil leaking from a ruptured oil well in the Gulf of Mexico, and added that the disaster “underscores the necessity of seeking alternative fuel sources,” Fox News Channel reported.
Addressing workers at the Solyndra Inc. solar panel manufacturing facility in Fremont, Calif., following a tour of the plant, Obama conceded that the U.S. would not “transition out of oil next year or 10 years from now.”
“The risks our current dependence on oil holds for our environment and our coastal communities is not the only cost involved in our dependence on these fossil fuels,” Obama said. “Around the world from China to Germany our competitors are waging a historic effort to lead in developing new energy technologies.”
The president said his administration is “intensively engaged” with scientists to explore all possibilities for putting a stop to the spill but acknowledged that “a lot of damage has been done already, livelihoods destroyed, landscapes scarred, wildlife affected, lives have been lost,” Fox News reported.
Obama spoke before BP began its “top kill” procedure at 1pm CT Wednesday to try to cap the ruptured oil well in the Gulf of Mexico after previous efforts to stem the flow failed.
Obama is set to visit Louisiana’s Gulf Coast on Friday to inspect the damage caused by the oil spill.
