(CANVAS STAFF REPORTS) - What happens in Vegas shouldn't always stay in Vegas as Rima Fakih proved Sunday night when she became the first Arab-American crowned Miss USA.
The 24-year-old Michigan woman nearly fell while walking in a long, strapless gown with a train. However, Fakih won the pageant without a stumble.
When asked how she felt about winning the crown, she replied, "Ask me after I've had a pizza."
During the interview portion, Fakih fielded a question about birth control and health insurance. Fakih said she believed insurance should cover the cost of contraception.
“I believe that birth control is just like every other medication even though it’s a controlled substance,” she said.
Born and raised in Dearborn, Fakih graduated from the University of Michigan with a bachelor’s degree in economics . During her college years, Fakih was a volunteer social worker.
Fakih will represent the United States in the 2010 Miss Universe pageant. She will receive a one-year lease in a New York apartment with living expenses, an undisclosed salary and various health, professional and beauty services.
Last year, the daughter of Lebanese immigrants became the first Arab-American crowned Miss Michigan USA .
In a recent interview with the Global Arab Network , Fakih was asked whether her status as a beauty queen could affect the image of Arab-Americans.
“I think it would prove that Arabs don't always try to separate themselves, but instead are integrated into American culture,” she said.
After her reign as Miss USA ends Fakih plans to enter law school. In her spare time, Fakih enjoys dancing, kickboxing and running, according to MissMichiganUSA.com .
She is the first Miss Michigan to win the Miss USA title since Kenya Moore in 1993.
Miss Oklahoma USA Morgan Elizabeth Woolard was first runner-up to Fakih. Contestants represented all 50 states and the District of Columbia.
Sunday’s pageant was held at the Theatre for the Performing Arts in Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas.
The pageant was called into question by some for posting risque photos of its contestants to promote this year's telecast.
