Money-losing airlines keep finding new ways to try and nickel-and-dime themselves out of debt.
Airlines are extending holiday surcharges and, in some cases, increasing them.
Airlines have been tacking on an extra $10 to $20 for travel around Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's.
Now, the program and the fees are expanding.
If you have to travel in and out of the Miami area on Superbowl weekend, get ready to be gouged. Expect to pay an extra $50 on Delta or Northwest.
Now busy travel periods like Easter and Memorial Day travel will also see a surcharge of up to $30. United, Delta and Northwest have those fees.
US Airways isn't just limiting surcharges to holidays. It's adding an extra 5% to all tickets starting on May 8, 2010.
U.S. airlines are expected to lose about $4 billion in 2009.
Bestfares.com has a table showing the affected dates and surcharges.
