Mintz also shared the following tips on handling debt collectors:
1. Whether you owe the debt or not, never ignore debt collectors. Even small debts can hurt your credit record.
2. Make sure the collector knows that you know your rights.
3. Get everything in writing -- if they say you owe a debt, demand proof of it in writing. If you make a deal over the phone with a debt collector, insist that it is confirmed in writing. It is the best way to protect yourself now and in the future
4. Make sure the debt collector is licensed by Department of Consumer Affairs
5. If you have problems, call the Dept of Consumer Affairs. They can help you whether you owe the debt or not. New Yorkers have significant rights in New York City. Call 311.
