MYFOXNY.COM - NY Money Authority headlines for Thursday, August 20:
CASH FOR CLUNKERS ENDING: The end could be near for the popular cash for clunkers program. The Obama administration says it will announce by tomorrow how it intends to discontinue the program which offers car buyers rebates of up to $4,500 if they trade in their old vehicle for a more fuel efficient one. Some car dealers are complaining about delays in rebate payments from the government. Here in New York, hundreds of auto dealerships left the program because they cannot afford to offer more rebates. So far, auto dealers have made deals worth more than $1.8B and are on pace to exhaust the program's $3 billion in funds next month.
APPLIANCE REBATES: Appliance manufacturers are banking on the success of their own "cash for clunkers" type program. Beginning this fall, federal rebates will be available for purchasers of high-efficiency household appliances, furnaces and air-conditioning systems. Three-hundred- million was set aside for the program in the economic stimulus package. Manufacturers hope the rebates will revive slumping sales.
