Rain and Flood Forecast and Alerts

Updated: Sunday, 14 Mar 2010, 2:46 PM EDT

NEW YORK WEATHER AUTHORITY - Given the current forecast data, there could be anywhere from 2 to 4 inches of rain falling over the area this weekend.

Aside from the usual flooding possible in poor drainage areas, additional snow melt across the northern and western suburbs which still have some snow cover will lead to additional flooding. Ice jams may occur on area rivers which will also aggravate the situation.

As we approach the new moon phase this weekend, astronomical tides will be running higher. With a strong and prolonged onshore flow, there will the potential for minor to moderate coastal flooding during the high tide cycles.

The worst may be during Saturday night with tides running 2 - 3 feet above average along the Atlantic Ocean areas and 3 to 4 feet for Long Island sound. This will likely bring Coastal Flood Watches to the area this weekend.
