MYFOX NEW YORK STAFF REPORT
MYFOXNY.COM - A winter storm that is dumping inch after inch of wet snow on the Tristate has slammed New York City, the Hudson Valley, and the Catskills Thursday. The storm is expected to continue affecting the area through Friday.
The National Weather Service and the New York Weather Authority forecast a snow accumulation of 10 to 15 inches in New York City and the nearby suburbs. Western Long Island will get 5 to 10 inches, while eastern Long Island will get 2 to 5 inches. The Catskills could get 15 to 22 inches.
The rain/snow line which has held firm most of the day from the Hudson Valley to Queens will slowly shift eastward, according to Weather Authority Nick Gregory. This means that areas such as Long Island which have seen mainly heavy rain all day will change over to snow by Friday morning.
In New York City, the Parks Department said that numerous trees had fallen because of the heavy snow. A falling limb killed a man in Central Park.
The National Weather Service says that a deepening low will produce gusty west winds over western portions of the Tristate and Long Island. The winds could gust as high as 35 mph from late Thursday into early Friday.
