L.I. Drivers Angry Over 'Rolling Red' Tickets

MYFOXNY.COM - Some motorists are complaining that new red-light cameras in Nassau County are getting them ticketed for so-called rolling right turns -- not coming to a full stop before turning right on red.

Now some local lawmakers are saying they passed legislation approving the cameras, but weren't made aware that the cameras would be used to ticket people for turning right on red without stopping.

"We have placed these cameras at the county's highest risk intersections," said County Executive Tom Suozzi, in August. "These red light cameras will improve both driver and pedestrian safety. They will deter drivers from speeding through intersections and posing a serious danger to everyone on the road. This will help us reduce the number of car accidents, deaths, and injuries, and it will give us the tools we need to go after reckless drivers who put others at risk. I thank the members of the County and State Legislature who pushed this important initiative forward."

The county's Web site makes it clear that "running a red light" includes not stopping before turning right on red. It even outlines the four ways a motorist can get a ticket and shows sample videos of infractions.

Various ways to receive a Notice of Liability due to a Red Light Camera Violation:

• Left Turn while Traffic Signal is Red
• Going Straight through on a Red Light Signal
• Making a right on Red but failing to make a complete stop
• Blatant disregard for a red light
