TRENTON, N.J. - The design isn't changing, but license plates in New Jersey will have a slightly different look come next year.

The state Motor Vehicle Commission recently started issuing standard license plates beginning with the letter Z.

And when the final plate in that series — ZZZ-99Z — is issued sometime next year, the agency will reverse the sequence of letters and numbers on the plates, giving it about 25 million new combinations.

The new series, which will begin with A10-AAA and go through Z99-ZZZ, will likely last for about 20 years, officials said.

The color scheme — black letters and digits on a goldenrod background — will remain the same.
