MYFOXNY.COM - A mother and her three children escaped serious injury Wednesday evening after a tire crashed through the windshield of her van on Route 17.

Paramus police say a 2003 Chevy Express van was traveling southbound near Midland Avenue when it lost its drivers side rear wheel.

The wheel flew over the barrier in the middle of the road and smashed through the windshield of a van driven by a 38-year-old woman from Newburgh, New York.

She was taken to Valley hospital in Ridgewood to be treated for multiple abrasions but was well enough to be released Wednesday night.

Her three children, all under the age of 10, were transported to the hospital to be checked out but were fine.

The driver of the Chevy van was cited for not carrying an insurance card.  He was identified as a 48-year-old from Suffern, New York.

Police investigators say the ends of the bolts on the left rear axile appeared to have been stripped, causing the wheel to come free.
