Pedro Martinez Weirds Out After Big Loss

Even for Pedro Martinez, his exit from the Phillies after the Game 6 loss was very strange.

Martinez was ripped by the New York Yankees in the 7-3 loss that gave New York its 27th world title.

During the game, Martinez was seen coughing and one media person sitting behind home plate said Martinez, 38, was coughing up phlegm.

Pedro was then pulled from the game, walked to the locker room, showered and dressed, and cleaned out his locker.

Then, without a word, Martinez slipped out a back door after Charlie Manuel made a brief statement to the full team.

Martinez may have avoided his teammates, but a group of New York reporters caught him in a hallway.

There, he would only speak in Spanish and just answered a few questions.

“I’m extremely proud and I had fun and I enjoyed it,” Martinez said, “and I don’t regret anything.”

Martinez confirmed he was sick during that game and regretted how he pitched to the Yankees.

Then, in a moment, he was gone.

According to reporters at the scene, many of his Phillies teammates weren’t aware Pedro fled into the night.

The move casts further doubt on whether Martinez will be back with the Phillies – or if the team wants him.

Martinez reportedly wants $5 million for next season, and the Phillies will be under great pressure to bring in a strong starter to compliment Cliff Lee and young guns JA Happ and Kyle Drabek.

With Cole Hamels a big question mark, a shaky Martinez may not be an option for a team that needs to sign Lee to a contract – or risk losing him to the Yankees after 2010.
