Behind a strong performance by starter Andy Pettitte and an offensive outburst by designated hitter Hideki Matsui, the New York Yankees defeated the Philadelphia Phillies in Game 6 of the World Series Wednesday to secure their 27th championship title, and their first in the new Yankee Stadium.
Ecstatic fans poured out of Yankee Stadium, cheering and dancing, while others crowded Times Square to watch the final outs on the jumbo TV screen. Meantime, dozens of other Yankees faithful filled Modell's to buy their championship gear -- caps, t-shirts and other memorabilia -- just moments after the game was over.
