MYFOXNY.COM - An 18-year-old high school student had to be rescued from frigid waters in a Catskill lake in a bizarre incident.
The New York State Police say the Boards of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) student left the Sullivan County vocational campus and ran off into a wooded area. The teen then attempted to swim across a partially frozen pond and became stuck in chest deep water halfway across the pond.
A state trooper attempted to rescue the student by throwing a rope. The teen refused to grab the rope.
The unidentified teen eventually became lethargic due to the extreme conditions. At that point Trooper Stephen Johnstone and a volunteer fireman entered the water and rescued the student before he became submerged.
He was transported by Mobil Medic Ambulance to Catskill Regional Hospital for hypothermia treatment and a mental health evaluation.
