MYFOXY.COM - Did you know that GPS devices are only as good as their updated maps? FOX 5 investigated and found that updating maps regularly may help to prevent GPS errors that lead you on weird routes, and worse.
"You need to update because road systems are constantly changing," said Darren Hayes, a computer science professor at Pace University. "Remember there's not a whole lot of intelligence in a GPS. It's not a full-fledged computer."
SHRINKING THE BRAIN
Did you know that using the GPS too much might shrink your brain?
Recent studies at McGill University in Canada found that over-reliance on GPS can damage the brain, impair memory and maybe even lead to Alzheimer's disease.
Memories are stored in a section of the brain called the hippocampus. With the hippocampus, it's a use it or lose it kind of thing, according to Professor Vastal Thakkar of NYU Medical Center.
"That area of the brain can actually slow down or stop, and that can lead to shrinkage," Thakkar said.
But the hippocampus can repair itself, if you use it.
"The good news is that it could increase in size if we exercise it," Thakkar said.
DISTRACTED DRIVING
Also beware: The NYPD and the New Jersey State Police say putting data into a GPS while you're driving is considered distracted driving. A cop can pull you over and issue you a ticket that will cost you between $100 and $600. It will also earn you points on your license.
