Legislature Holding Special Session

MYFOXNY.COM - New York's Legislature is meeting in extraordinary session to confront a $3.2 billion deficit and possibly hold a landmark vote to provide final legislative approval of same-sex marriage.

However, there were no agreements Monday that were certain to be part of Tuesday's session.

Gov. David Paterson has a plan to cut spending for hospitals and what he calls a 3 percent cut in school aid for the remainder of the year as well as other measures to meet the shortfall and pay December's bills.

The Senate and Assembly have some counterproposals to minimize or eliminate cuts.

The Senate may also take up a bill to legalize same-sex marriage. Even if the issue comes to a vote, it remains unclear whether 35 senators would give it the support needed.
