MYFOXNY.COM - Now that Secaucus Mayor Dennis Elwell has resigned, the town council is making changes regarding 'pay to play.'
The illegal practice of governments or politicians granting favors to someone willing to pay for them, has been introduced over the years in Secaucus.
Councilman Gary Jeffas told Good Day NY on Wednesday a city ordinance is now in effect probiting 'pay to play.'
The change took place after Elwell's lawyer announced the long-time town leader's resignation on Tuesday night.
(AP) -- Secaucus Mayor Dennis Elwell is the first elected
official arrested in last week's corruption sweep in New
Jersey to resign.
ecaucus town administrator David Drumeler said he received
Elwell's resignation Tuesday afternoon, effective immediately.
Elwell's lawyer says his client is not admitting guilt and will
defend himself against the allegations.
Elwell is charged with accepting $10,000 from a federal
cooperating witness in exchange for help on a building project in
Secaucus.
The 64-year-old has been mayor since 1999 and faced re-election in November.
