New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine, a Democrat, has chosen state Sen. Loretta Weinberg as his running mate, according to a top Democratic official. Weinberg, 74, gained a reputation for taking on members of her own party, the AP reports.

She represents District 37, which encompasses several communities of Bergen County. Prior to her election to the senate, she served in the state Assembly, on the Teaneck City Council, and as the assistant administrator to Bergen County, according to her Web site.

She was born in New York, graduated from the University of California, and attended Fairleigh Dickinson University, her site says.

Corzine is set to make the official announcement Saturday.

He and Weinberg face against Republicans Christopher Christie, a former U.S. attorney for New Jersey, and Monmouth County Sheriff Kim Guadagno.

This is the first election in which New Jersey's voters will elect a lieutenant governor.
