Adopting a serious and somber tone, a contrite Tiger Woods apologized for his "irresponsible and selfish behavior" on Friday.

Woods said that he has always tried to be a private person but that he wanted everyone to know that he and his wife have begun the process of figuring out how much damage he had caused their marriage and their family.

Emotion could be seen boiling through Woods as he spoke about something in the media which he took exception to. He called reports that his wife Elin Nordegren had hit him false. Woods was aggressive in saying that there has never been domestic violence in his home.

Woods said that he has a long way to go to get better. He said that he was in sex rehab for 45 days from December to early February. Woods said that despite the media wanting answers to an entire spectrum of questions about his affairs, he believes that these issues are between him and his wife.

Woods said that people have speculated things that are false. He said he has never used performance enhancing drugs, calling such allegations "categorically false."

He said that he will return to golf one day, but that he doesn't know when that will be.

Woods said that in rehab he has learned to reembrace his spirituality. He said that he grew up with buddhism in his life and that it has notbeen as big a part of his life in recent years.

At the end of his apology Woods hugged his mother and a few friends before receding once again.

Soon after his long-awaited public statement Woods will leave the comfort of friends and family and return to what his become a new part of his life: Sex rehab.

According to a letter obtained by the Associated Press, PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem said that Woods odd timing for his public apology is a result of a tight schedule that will see him return to sex rehab soon after his Friday morning appearance.

The timing of Woods appearance during the Match Play Championship was seen as curious by some and has been criticized by others like golf pro Ernie Els. But in his letter Finchem stressed that Woods had no choice.

"As we understand it, Tiger's therapy called for a week's break at this time during which he has spent a few days with his children and then will make his statement before returning," Finchem said. "Accordingly, there was very little flexibility in the date for the announcement."
