MYFOXNY.COM - Chief executives of several major corporations, including Fox 5 parent company News Corp., are joining Mayor Michael Bloomberg to form a coalition advocating for immigration reform.
Thursday morning, News Corp. CEO Rupert Murdoch and Mayor Bloomberg appeared on Fox and Friends to explain the initiative.
The plan would include a way for undocumented immigrants who are now in the United States to gain legal status.
"You say to immigrants that have money and are entrepreneurs from around the world, come to America, we'll give you a green card," Bloomberg said. "If you start a business here, employ 10 or more Americans and as long as they're still working, you keep your green card. It matches our needs with their needs and everybody benefits."
The group calls itself the Partnership for a New American Economy and includes several other big city mayors and CEOs.
"I don't know but I think it can be done," Mr. Murdoch said. "I think we can show to the public the benefits of having migrants and the jobs that go with them."
The group is trying to reframe immigration reform as the solution to repairing and stimulating the economy.
The group says it intends to make its point to policymakers by "publishing studies, conducting polls, convening forums and sponsoring public education campaigns."
The tactics are similar to those used by Bloomberg's coalition of mayors who support gun control.
