(MYFOX NATIONAL) - You probably had a hunch about New York drivers being the worst, but now there's proof.
A recent survey of 5,000 drivers around the country found that New Yorkers scored the worst (70.5 percent) on GMAC Insurance's National Drivers Test for 2009 . Meanwhile Idaho and Wisconsin tied for first in the nation with an average test score of 80.6 percent.
The test, which measures how much people know about safe driving, found that 20.1 percent of licensed Americans (roughly 41 million drivers) would not pass a written exam if they took it today. Most had problems with questions about yellow lights and safe following distances.
"We've seen the results ebb and flow, and this year, scores are down. This reiterates the fact that each and every one of us need to continually be brushing up on safe driving practices," said Wade Bontrager, senior vice president of the affinity division at GMAC .
But it seems that traffic fatalities are on the decline, so we must be doing something right. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recently reported that in the first 10 months of 2008, traffic deaths fell by 10 percent to 31,110 people compared to the previous year. The Governors Highway Safety Association also found that highway deaths declined by 10.7 percent last year nationwide.
