This morning more horror and heartache for people wondering if the graves of their loved ones have been desecrated.
Many affected families are wondering if their loved ones’ gravesites have been disturbed, leaving them feeling vulnerable and violated.
Caroyln Towns is the woman who investigators say was running the whole Plots for Profit Scheme. Prosecutors say she ran the books at Burr Oaks and was able to pull off the scheme with help from three grave diggers: Maurice Dailey, Keith Nicks and Terrance Nicks.
All four are held on $200,000 bond or more and are being held in protective custody according to the Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart. Because there has been such outrage over the situation in the Black Community, they're in their own cells kept away from the general population.
The suspects allegedly dug up old, unmarked graves that had not been visited in a while. In some cases they were allegedly reselling plots and double stacking the bodies.
One woman whose brother and sister were buried at Burr Oak, suspects their sites have been tampered with fears they are now among the bodies dumped like trash in a massive grave at the back of the cemetery.
Meantime the number of disturbed sites has grown from 100 to 300. Authorities are looking into questions about how this could happen and why the cemetery wasn't regulated by officials.
