(MYFOX NATIONAL) - Two south Florida deputies are being called heroes after rescuing a person from a burning car on June 2. The rescue was captured on police dash cam video, showing Indian River County Sheriff's deputies racing to a burning car where two people were fighting to get out.
"To be honest with you, it's pretty scary, you know, you were fighting time," said Deputy Brian Reimsnyder. "Your worst fear is that you're not going to be able to get to the person and then have them burning right there in front of your eyes."
Deputies Reimsnyder and John Kane tried putting out the fire with extinguishers. They were able to pull one passenger out, though the woman driving had to spend a few minutes waiting for fire crews to arrive with the Jaws of Life.
"The flames were already starting to move into the cabin of the vehicle where the passengers were sitting," said Kane.
"[It was] pretty traumatic, both [passengers] were kind of out of it," said Reimsnyder.
Deputy Kane said, "They were lucky."
The deputies said quick thinking and years of training played a big role in the positive outcome of the incident. According to WFLX the two people in the car walked away with minor burns and cuts.
WPBF reported that the car caught fire after hitting a tree early on Old Dixie Highway near Vero Beach, Fla.
