MYFOXNY.COM STAFF REPORT
MYFOXNY.COM - It's that time of the year when you turn clocks back 1 hour.
Daylight Saving Time ends Sunday November 7, 2010. Daylight Saving Time began Sunday, March 14, 2010.
Daylight Saving Time (sometimes called Daylight Savings Time) ends at 2 a.m. This mean the daylight will begin earlier in the morning when clocks fall back and the sun will set earlier.
It's also a good time to check the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Also check the clocks in your computers, DVD players and microwaves in case they don't automatically adjust the time.
If you live in Arizona, Hawaii, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, those areas don't observe daylight time so clocks will not need to be changed.
If you're not happy about losing thats hour's sleep in the spring, below are some ways Daylight Saving Time saves you precious seconds during that time:
Fast forward! The average running time for a feature film is 1.85 hours. Most current DVD players feature fast-forward at 2x, 4x and 8x normal speed. 2007 Best Picture winner ’No Country For Old Men’ took 122 minutes in theaters, but when it’s released on DVD this Tuesday you can blow through it in a cool 61, 30.5 or 15.25 minutes. Sure, you won’t catch the nuances of Javier Bardem’s acclaimed performance or the Oscar-winning screenplay, but you don’t have TIME for that!
ESTIMATED TIME SAVINGS: 55-96 minutes (average)
’ Learn all of your computer’s keyboard shortcuts. Sure, everyone knows about Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V, but what about Ctrl-Z or the mysterious Ctrl-U? (Warning: Learning process can result in accidentally closing windows.)
ESTIMATED TIME SAVINGS: 2 minutes.
’ Only make sandwiches using
Smuckers’ ’Goober Grape’ peanut butter/jelly combo or Hellman’s mustard-mayonnaise blend.
ESTIMATED TIME SAVINGS: 10 seconds (30 seconds if sandwich contains
only Goober Grape and mustard-mayonnaise).
’ Why waste precious time entering two separate numbers on a microwave timer when you can enter 55 seconds for a minute, 88 seconds for a minute and a half, and so on?
ESTIMATED TIME SAVINGS: 5 seconds (cumulative).
’ Use the ’door close’ button for all elevator trips. If the elevator does not respond immediately, be sure to press the button several more times, as ’door close’ buttons are extremely complex mechanisms and may not ’catch’ on first press. If someone calls to you to hold the elevator door, DO NOT COMPLY ’ this person is attempting to steal your valuable time.
ESTIMATED TIME SAVINGS: 0.5 seconds. (Note: Time saved may be imaginary.)
