President Obama signed the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act, which calls on Americans to serve their communities and the country. The call to service also designated September 11 as an annually recognized National Day of Service and Remembrance.

"I ask every American to make an enduring commitment to serving your community and your country in whatever way you can," President Obama says. "And together, we will measure our progress not just in number of hours served or volunteers mobilized -- but in the impact our efforts have on the life of this nation."

Some loved ones of the victims of the 9/11 attacks say the act is a fitting way to pay tribute to the ones who were lost on that day.

"As a 9/11 family member, I cannot think of more inspiring, appropriate and constructive tribute to my late brother and all those who perished, were injured or rose in service -- to rekindle at least for one day each year the remarkable spirit of compassion and service that unified our country," said MyGoodDeed.org co-founder and vice president Jay S. Winuk, in a statement. His younger brother Glenn J. Winuk, an attorney, volunteer firefighter and EMT, died in the line of duty in the collapse of the World Trade Center. "This groundbreaking national service legislation will greatly benefit the nation in so many meaningful ways as we face these challenging times."

The White House has set up a Web site called SERVE.GOV that serves as a portal for Americans to find ways to serve in their communities. You can visit the site, type in your ZIP code and some keywords to see what opportunities are available in your area.
