MYFOXNY.COM - More than one million students and 80,000 teachers headed back to New York City's public schools on Wednesday.
The first full day of classes will be followed by two days off. Schools will be closed in observance of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, on Thursday and Friday.
The start of a new school year brought out Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Schools Chancellor Joel Klein who welcomed students at P.S. 172 in Brooklyn on Wednesday morning.
The school is only one of nearly 1,700 in the city public school system.
