MYFOXNY.COM - The Thunderbirds flew over the Hudson River on Tuesday to kick off Air Force Week New York City 2010. The event is held August 24-29.
New York Police Commissioner Ray. Kelly, Fox 5's Greg Kelly and Secretary of the Air Force Michael B. Donley participated in the opening ceremonies today on the flight deck of the Intrepid.
"It's an honor to recognize the contributions and sacrifices that the men and women of the United States Air Force have made since its inception in the defense of America and its allies around the world," said Commissioner Kelly.
Air Force Week New York will feature numerous events throughout New York City's five boroughs. Various Air Force displays such as Military Working Dogs, the Air Force NASCAR, the U.S. Air Force Falconer program, medical displays and other opportunities will be on hand at the Intrepid through Aug. 26.
Air Force Weeks occur at select locations and showcase airmen to Americans who do not have day-to-day contact with the Air Force.
On Aug. 25 at 11 a.m., the New York Air National Guard 106th Rescue Wing will be flying a HH-60 Pavehawk onto the Intrepid. It will remain on display until it takes off at 4 p.m. and departs the area.
