MYFOXNY.COM - With the holiday season over, you can help the environment and the community by recycling your Christmas tree into wood chips for tree pits and gardens.

The New York City Parks and Recreation Department's MulchFest 2010 will take place on January 10 and 11 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at several sites around the five boroughs. Bring a bag so you can grab some free mulch for your own use.

Remove all lights, ornaments, and decorations from the trees prior to drop-off. You'll be able to take wood chips and/or mulch from designated chipping sites. Mulch will not be available at "Drop-off Only" sites. For more information and site locations see MulchFest 2010 .

How to Recycle Your Tree if You Miss MulchFest

The NYC Department of Sanitation will be conducting special collections for mulching and recycling of Christmas trees.

Collections will take place beginning on Monday, January 4, 2010 through Friday, January 15, 2010 .

Residents are encouraged to put out their discarded trees at curbside as early as possible during the collection period.

Remove all lights, tinsel, ornaments and stands before setting trees at the curb. DO NOT PLACE TREES IN PLASTIC BAGS.
