To be named grand marshal of the St. Patrick's Day parade in New York City is one of the most prestigious honors for an Irish American.
In 2010, that honor will go to a New Yorker who has already racked up many achievements: Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly, father to Good Day New York's Greg Kelly.
"The 2010 Grand Marshal is an outstanding individual who has been a guiding light in the United States," said John Dunleavy, parade chairman. "He has dedicated himself in the service of others, a public servant who is not only recognized locally, but nationally and internationally. He has served his country with distinction at many levels and is internationally respected for his expertise in his field. He is a native New Yorker and has been recognized for his achievements with numerous honorary degrees from educational institutions across the United States."
New York's parade traces its roots all the way back to 1762 --
14 years before the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
